About the Work
Endless Summer is a site-specific installation project that began in 2013 as part of an artist-in-residence grant in Bonn. The installation consists of around 2,500 artificial flowers filled with sugar water and perfume. In temporary settings, the artist lets these artificial flower fields 'grow' in different locations, creating situations that provoke immediate reactions from both passersby and insects.
The starting point of the project is the human need to preserve a moment or a feeling. The artificial rose, as an industrially manufactured, durable symbol of love and desire, stands for a promise of permanence. At the same time, it points to a paradoxical emptiness: it is durable, but lifeless; a form without life.
By providing these artificial objects with scent and food, the installation shifts the boundary between living and dead, natural and artificial. The reaction of the bees activates the installation and gives it an unexpected dynamic. The artificial object becomes a point of attraction, a sign of attractiveness and desire, and at the same time opens up a critical reflection on mechanisms of seduction, the instrumentalization of nature, and the commodification of bodies and emotions.
Endless Summer operates at the intersection of nature, economy and imagination, reflecting social questions about the commodification of emotions, the instrumentalization of natural systems and dealing with artificial permanence. The work makes visible how desire, attractiveness and vitality are generated, used and consumed in economic contexts, thus opening up a critical view of contemporary forms of value creation and sustainability.
