About the Work

T-Chron stands for Telluric Chronometer—a timepiece whose rhythm is not determined by technical standards, but by the Earth itself. The virtual clock developed by Michaela Hanemann is more than a timekeeper. It is a fusion of natural process and digital code, existing as a time-based, media artwork in the digital realm. Its rhythm follows not the second, but the heartbeat of the Earth.

T-Chron is based on real impulses from the Earth's magnetic field, recorded by the Niemegk Geomagnetic Observatory and part of international scientific measurement networks. Every pulse, every movement, every sound thus originates from a real measurement, deep within the planet. When the magnetic field changes, the clock beats. If it remains calm, time stands still.

The work unfolds as an ongoing process, continuously updating itself with current measurement data. It is not conceived as a static object, but as a living system moving between scientific infrastructure, technological mediation, and individual perception.

In an era when many people have lost touch with natural rhythms and daily life is shaped by acceleration, availability, and digital beats, this work opens a quiet access to a different sense of time—one oriented to planetary movements rather than standardized time grids.

By translating global measurement data into a personal, physically perceptible time, the work responds to a present in which time is increasingly standardized, accelerated, and managed by technical systems. In the tradition of time-based and media art since the late 20th century, which understands time not as a neutral quantity but as a negotiable cultural construct, T-Chron sets a different rhythm against this logic. The clock follows no economic or functional purpose, but makes it tangible that time can also be thought of as dependent on planetary processes. Thus, time is not only measured, but renegotiated as a shared resource whose rhythm is not determined solely by humans.
