Hybride Pflanzen Zeichnungen

Graphite and wantercolor on paper, 16 x 12 in, 2023

About the Work

The series presents drawings of hybrid forms in which plant structures intersect with geometric polyhedra. Executed in pencil and watercolor, the works deliberately reference the aesthetic language of classical botanical illustration, while the Latin subtitles evoke the tradition of scientific classification.

Here, order is both celebrated and disrupted: the polyhedra appear as rigorous experimental frameworks, attempting to channel and rationalize growth yet the plants resist this control. Optimization emerges as a human obsession with control, overwhelming our capacity to perceive the whole and anticipate consequences. From one perspective, it seems elegant and compelling; from another, impractical, contradictory, and at times lifeless. Between the drive for systems and organic vitality, a subtle, wry irony permeates the works.

The hybrids can be read as contemporary studies of nature less representations of real plants than models for reflecting on our relationship to order, science, and the environment. They reference historical visual traditions from early modern herbals to modern scientific illustration—while playfully subverting them.

Against the backdrop of contemporary debates on ecology, the Anthropocene, and human intervention in natural systems, the drawings gain added relevance, revealing tensions between growth and geometric control, analysis and poetic freedom.

Situated in the open space between art and science, history and the present, the works create connections across artistic and cultural-historical contexts, inviting a reflective and playful engagement with knowledge, natural representation, optimization, and societal responsibility.
