About the Work

The workspace functioned as a studio during the creation of the work: within it, the piece developed as a material and relational process of making. Architecture, lighting conditions, and the temporal rhythm of the space structured the painting process, rendering the site itself an active participant in the work.

The artist worked on-site almost daily over a defined period. The depicted elements materials, motifs, techniques functioned less as illustration than as a relational constellation shaping the composition. The technique combined layered paint with drawings or other interventions. Flowing color and material reactions acted as uncontrollable partners, continuously modulating the surfaces. Submitted contributions from participants, such as sketches or drawings, were incorporated into the painting process, allowing individual gestures and expressions to enter the composition directly. In one case, participants were even invited to work directly on the canvas, dissolving the boundary between observation, participation, and co-authorship. The process itself became the carrier of meaning.

Agency and participation were distributed across the artist, the participants, the materials, and the space. Collective authorship, relational-performative processes, and the involvement of materiality were thus inscribed into the work’s creation. Participants simultaneously acted as a factor of chance, their interventions directly influencing the course and form of the work.

The work was created in the studio, where its emergence as a performative and relational event was visible. Today it exists as a long-term loan at the Hilde Schneider House in Hannover, where it can be viewed at any time and its materiality, traces of the process, and relational structures can continue to be read and reflected upon. The project demonstrates that meaning does not reside solely with the artist, but emerges from the interplay of people, materials, and unpredictable processes that were already active during its creation.
